Kerala HC initiates measures against review bombing, call for dedicated web portal

Kochi: According to a report, the Kerala High Court has directed the amicus curiae to submit a report to cover various aspects, including the establishment of a dedicated web portal aimed at facilitating communication between filmmakers and the public regarding movies facing box office setbacks due to review bombing.

This decision is part of the High Court’s ongoing efforts since last year to deal with problems caused by the review bombing. The  State Police Chief has already submitted a set of guidelines to the court as part of a protocol aimed at averting film review bombings.

Earlier, Ajith Vinayaka Films, the production company of the film “Bandra,” filed a petition with the Thiruvananthapuram Judicial First-Class Magistrate against seven YouTubers. The company is seeking compensation, alleging financial losses due to negative promotion by these YouTubers. Malayalam film producers have also opted to partner exclusively with recognised digital media organisations and YouTubers for their movie promotions.

Justice Devan Ramachandran has presently ordered the submission of a report on supplementary measures, including the suggested web portal, in accordance with this protocol. The proceedings have been postponed until February 13, as advocate Shyam Padman, acting as the amicus curiae, requested more time.
The court is currently reviewing petitions from Mubeen Rauf, the director of the movie ‘Aromalinte Adhya Pranayam,’ and others. They are challenging negative reviews, including those from online vloggers.
