Wayanad: District Collector Dr. Renu Raj has issued an order to tranquillize the wild elephant in Mananthavady. The District Collector stated that if the elephant moves into an open area, it will be tranquillized promptly. However, due to the current proximity of houses and establishments, the Collector emphasised the need for caution to prevent potential crises if the elephant were to flee during the tranquilization process.
In response to the situation, a specialised team from the Forest Department has been sent to Mananthavady as part of a mission to manage the wild elephant. Kumnki Elephants (trained elephants), Vikram and Surya, from Muthanga and Anapanthi, have been brought in for assistance. The Karnataka Forest Department has pledged full support to the mission, intending to return the captured elephant to Karnataka after administering drug shots.
As the wild tusker continues to venture near the city, it has not displayed aggression thus far. However, concerns linger, especially considering the previous issues caused by this elephant in Hassan, Karnataka. The elephant, captured two weeks ago and released in a place on the Bandipur forest border, has now reached Mananthavady.
