Thiruvananthapuram: The cost of food in prisons, a resource for many common people, has witnessed a price hike ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 10 per dish. This increase, affecting 21 dishes, including dishes like rice and chicken fries, will take immediate effect following the government’s approval of the jail department’s recommendation for the adjustment.
16 popular items from those 21 dishes will see a hike of Rs 5, with meals and chicken fries witnessing a hike of Rs 10. The increase in the cost of essential commodities and the absence of government intervention prompted the jail department to raise the price of prison food.
As a result of the adjustment in price, a meal that was previously sold for Rs 40 will now cost Rs 50, and chicken fries will see an increase from Rs 35 to Rs 45. Meanwhile, the cost of jail chapati remains unaffected. Furthermore, a 750-gram plum cake, originally priced at Rs 170, is now cost Rs 200, while a 350-gram plum cake has increased from Rs 85 to Rs 100.
Sold under the name ‘Freedom Food,’ meals are distributed through outlets and vehicles located in prisons across the state. There is a high demand for food made by prisoners in prisons. However, the recent price hike presents a significant challenge for the common people, impacting their access to budget-friendly food resources.
