Thiruvananthapuram: Following the failure of the Kerala government to disburse the dues for the medical suppliers, the suppliers stopped the supply of medicine to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Medical suppliers stated that they would resume the supply of medicine to the hospital as soon as the pending amount is received.
Reports suggest that the supply of medicine to the Medical College Hospital may be completely disrupted within two days. The Kerala state government owes around Rs 75 lakh to the suppliers of Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. The arrears are on purchases of life-saving drugs, surgical instruments, and fluids.
Kozhikode Medical College is one of the places where several costly medicines for cancer and others are available at a low cost. As the supply of medicines is stopped, patients are now forced to purchase medicines at Rs 30,000, whereas they could obtain the same from the Medical College at the cost of Rs. 8,000.
It is indicated that currently, the Urology, Nephrology, and Orthopedics departments have been affected by the suspension of drug supply. The suppliers also informed that the supply of ‘pacemakers’ and ‘stents’ will also be stopped if the dues are not cleared.
This new move by the drug suppliers comes after they sent multiple letters to the Kerala State Health Department and the Finance Department, requesting settlement of the arrears, which proved unsuccessful.
