Dhaka: One of the convicts in the killing of country’s founding father Seikh Mujibur Rahman, Abdul Majed, an ex Bangladeshi Army officer, has been hanged, according to a prison official.

“The convict was hanged at 12.01 am Sunday,” Dhaka Tribune reported.

Rahman was killed along with his most of the family members at his residence in 1975. However, his daughters, Sheikh Rehana and Sheikh Hasina, the incumbent Prime Minister of Bangladesh, survived as they were not in the country.

On Wednesday, President Abdul Hamid turned down the mercy petition of Abdul Majed, clearing the way for his execution.

A specialised police unit arrested Abdul Majed, as soon as he returned home after hiding for nearly two and half decades in India.

Five convicts in Bangabandhu’s assassination – Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed and Mohiuddin Ahmed – were hanged in January 2010. Another convict Aziz Pasha died in Zimbabwe in 2001.
