New York: New York City is shrouded in smoke after wildfires broke out in Canada. New York is experiencing its worst toxic air pollution in its recent recorded history after the wildfire smoke entered the country from Canada. As the air quality is poor, people are advised to use masks. Many events in the US were cancelled as the smoke did not subside. Citing the poor air quality conditions, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) cancelled Thursday’s horse racing at Belmont Park. If the conditions do not subside, this will also affect the final match of this year’s Triple Crown in the US on Saturday.
“NYRA will actively monitor all available data on weather information as we work towards the resumption of training and racing both here at Belmont Park and at Saratoga Race Course,” said David O’Rourke, president and CEO of the NYRA.
Meanwhile, New York Governor Kathy Hochul warned that one of racing’s biggest events could be cancelled if the air quality index exceeds 200. She prioritised air quality and everyone’s health.
