Washington: On Sunday evening, a concerning discovery was made within the White House complex. According to a source familiar with the matter, the Washington fire department and emergency services identified a white powder found in the West Wing as cocaine. The West Wing, which encompasses crucial areas such as the Oval Office, cabinet room, press area, and offices for the president’s staff, is directly connected to the executive mansion where President Joe Biden resides.
Following the discovery, the Secret Service acted quickly, temporarily locking down the White House compound. According to a Secret Service official, an “unknown item” was discovered in a West Wing work area on Sunday, causing the precautionary shutdown. The drug in issue was discovered to be cocaine during a normal Secret Service sweep.
The spokesperson further noted that the DC Fire Department was called to assess the situation and promptly determined that the item was non-hazardous. An investigation is currently underway to determine how the substance entered the White House and the cause and manner of the incident.
President Biden was not present in the White House at the time of the discovery. He and his family had returned from a weekend retreat at Camp David on Tuesday morning.
Given the significance of the West Wing and the numerous individuals who work there or pass through regularly, this incident highlights the importance of security measures and the need for thorough investigations into any potential breaches.
