Moscow drone attack: Russia holds Ukraine accountable for the attack launched against them

Moscow: On Monday, Russia’s defence ministry accused Ukraine of carrying out a “terrorist” drone attack on Moscow. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, and the city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed that two non-residential buildings were struck. Fortunately, there were no serious casualties or significant damage reported.

The defence ministry stated on its Telegram messaging app that two drones had been “suppressed and crashed.” However, it remained unclear whether the drones hit the buildings during the interception or if they had specifically targeted the structures. Neither the defence ministry nor the mayor revealed specifics regarding the site of the drone interception.

According to Russia’s state news agencies, fragments of the drones were found near a building on Komsomolsky Avenue, located about 2 Km from the defence ministry’s buildings in central Moscow. The incident led to traffic closures on both Komsomolsky Avenue and Likhachev Avenue in Moscow’s south, where a high-rise office building suffered damage.

Witnesses in the area described feeling the impact of the blast, with windows shattered and structures damaged. A video published on Russia’s defence ministry television channel Zvezda showed a high-rise building with missing windows on its top floors and damaged structures.

The alleged drone attack occurred following a week of Russia’s ongoing bombardment of Ukraine’s southern port city, Odesa. The attacks in Odesa have resulted in casualties, injuries, and severe damage to the historic Orthodox cathedral.

As of the time of the report, there was no immediate comment from Kyiv regarding the accusations made by Russia. Ukraine seldom publicly claims responsibility for attacks inside Russia or on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine. However, in recent months, Ukrainian authorities have maintained that targeting Russia’s military infrastructure is part of their counteroffensive strategy.
