Rabat: Over 630 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck Morocco’s High Atlas Mountain late Friday night, destroying buildings and sending people fleeing from their homes.

According to updated figures from the interior ministry on Saturday, the earthquake has resulted in the tragic loss of 632 lives, with the majority of fatalities occurring in the Al-Haouz and Taroudant provinces. The ministry also reported casualties in Ouarzazate, Chichaoua, Azilal, and Youssoufia provinces, as well as in the cities of Marrakesh, Agadir, and the Casablanca area.

Furthermore, 329 people sustained injuries, with 51 of them in critical condition, as confirmed by the ministry.

Reports from Moroccan media have indicated that the revered 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech, an iconic landmark in the city, suffered structural damage due to the earthquake. However, the full extent of the damage remains unclear, as reported by Reuters. Notably, the mosque’s majestic 69-metre (226-foot) minaret is often referred to as the “roof of Marrakech.”
