Rabat: The earthquake on friday in Morocco has tragically claimed over 2,000 lives, and government reports indicate that it has injured more than 2,000 people, with approximately 1,500 of them in critical condition. The Moroccan Interior Ministry has stated that the earthquake has affected a total of six provinces in the country.

Friday’s earthquake marked the most significant seismic event in Morocco in the past 120 years. The earthquake’s epicentre was located approximately 71 kilometres from Marrakesh, the country’s major city. International media outlets have reported that the earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, indicating its considerable strength and potential for significant damage.

The earthquake’s impact extended to coastal cities like Rabat, Casablanca, and Essaouira, where significant damage occurred. Furthermore, the region has experienced disruptions in electricity and internet connectivity, further complicating the response and recovery efforts. The 2004 earthquake in Al Hoceima, northeastern Morocco, was a tragic event that resulted in the loss of 628 lives and left 926 people injured.
