New Delhi: Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada’s opposition and head of the Conservative Party, has expressed his concerns regarding the strained relations between Canada and India. He has vowed to work towards re-establishing a “professional relationship” with New Delhi.
Poilievre, who also leads the Conservative Party, raised issues regarding the mistreatment of Indian diplomats in Canada and the growing number of hate crimes within the country. During an interview with Nepalese media outlet Namaste Radio Toronto, Poilievre emphasized the importance of nurturing a professional relationship with India, recognizing it as the world’s largest democracy.
Regarding the expulsion of 41 Canadian diplomats from India, Poilievre criticized Prime Minister Trudeau, asserting that his actions have tarnished Canada’s reputation both domestically and internationally. He went as far as to label Trudeau as “incompetent and unprofessional,” and he pointed out that Canada currently faces conflicts with major global powers.
In Trudeau’s stance against Hinduphobia, Poilievre called for criminal charges to be filed against anyone who vandalizes Hindu temples or causes harm to individuals within them. He pledged his commitment to combating Hinduphobia and ensuring the safety and freedom of worship for all. Recent polls indicate that Poilievre is the favoured candidate to become Canada’s next prime minister, with his party holding a significant lead over the incumbent Liberal Party.
