England: In an impressive display of skill and determination, Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden secured a spot in the pre-quarterfinals of the Wimbledon 2023 men’s doubles competition. Seeded sixth at the prestigious grass court Grand Slam, the dynamic duo triumphed over the unseeded British pair of Jacob Fearnley and Johannus on Monday, clinching a straight-set victory of 7-5, 6-3 in the second.

The match began on a challenging note for Bopanna and Ebden, as they found themselves trailing 1-3 against the local pair early on. However, they swiftly regained their momentum and fought their way back to level the score at 4-all. Despite a valiant effort from the British duo, Bopanna and Ebden maintained control and claimed the first set.

The second set proved to be a more straightforward affair for the Indo-Australian pair. With a breezy start, Bopanna and Ebden quickly established a commanding 4-1 lead. Although Fearnley and Monday attempted to stage a comeback, Bopanna and Ebden extinguished any hope and secured their spot in the third round.

Bopanna and Ebden, who have already tasted victory at the Qatar Open and Indian Wells earlier this year, will face the Dutch-American pair of David Pel and Reese Stalder in the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday. As they continue their quest for Wimbledon glory, the duo’s chemistry and formidable skills make them a formidable force on the court.

While Bopanna and Ebden soared to victory in the men’s doubles event, the 43-year-old Bopanna, alongwith Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski, faced disappointment in the mixed doubles competition. They bowed out in the first round on Sunday, unable to advance further.

Indian tennis players Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni also experienced an early exit from Wimbledon 2023, as they were defeated in their opening-round match of the men’s doubles event. Furthermore, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and N Sriram Balaji were unable to progress past the men’s doubles opener, ending their Wimbledon campaign on Saturday.

Ankita Raina, the sole Indian representative in the singles event, faced a challenging start as she was eliminated in the opening round of the qualifiers. Despite her early exit, Raina’s participation showcases India’s growing presence in international tennis and serves as an inspiration for aspiring players.
