Changwon, Republic of Korea: The highly anticipated ISSF (International Shooting Sports Federation) Junior World Championships 2023 are currently underway at the Changwon Shooting Range, showcasing the talent of young shooters from around the globe. With 90 talented Indian shooters participating in the under-21 age category, India boasts the largest contingent in the competition, closely followed by Korea with 66 athletes, while the USA has brought a team of 43 shooters.
This third edition of the junior shooting world championships has attracted over 550 shooters from 44 countries who are eagerly vying for medals in pistol, rifle, and shotgun events. The young Indian shooters are determined to make their mark and bring glory to their nation.
Among the Indian contingent is 16-year-old Darshna Rathore, an ISSF World Cup bronze medalist who will be competing in the women’s trap event. Rathore has already showcased her talent on the international stage and will be aiming to add another feather to her cap with a strong performance in Changwon.
India’s exceptional performance at the previous junior world championships in Lima, Peru, where they topped the medal tally with 43 medals, including 17 golds, has set high expectations for this year’s competition. The likes of Raiza Dhillon, Vinay Pratap Singh Chandrawat, Bakhtyaruddin Mohamadmuzahid Malek, and Naamya Kapoor, who played pivotal roles in India’s success in Peru, are also part of the Indian squad competing at the Changwon meet.
The ISSF Junior World Championships provide a platform for these young athletes to gain valuable experience and showcase their skills on the international stage. The competition not only allows them to compete against their peers but also serves as a stepping stone for their future in the sport.
