Kasaragod: The prodigious talent of Keralite shot putter VS Anupriya shone bright as she clinched a bronze medal in the Trinbago Commonwealth Youth Games held at Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago. Anupriya’s achievement marked the second medal for India at the Under-18 athletics championship, where she displayed her prowess with a remarkable throw of 15.62 metres at the iconic Hasely Crawford Stadium on Monday night.
The gold medal was seized by South Africa’s Alicia Eli Khunou, who showcased her dominance with an impressive effort of 17.97 meters. Meanwhile, Australia’s Xylavene Beale secured the silver medal with a commendable throw of 16.1 metres.
According to a report, the 16-year-old Anupriya, under the tutelage of coach K. C. Gireesh, earned her place in the Commonwealth Youth Games by previously securing a bronze medal at the Asian U-18 Athletics Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in April. At the Asian Championship, Anupriya showcased a throw of 16.37 metres, her personal best, demonstrating her remarkable potential on the international stage. A similar performance in Trinidad and Tobago could have potentially elevated her to a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Anupriya, the daughter of K. Sasi and Rajani, is currently a class 11 student at GCS Government Higher Secondary School in Elambachi, Trikaripur.
In a parallel feat, Karnataka’s Shoan Ganguly (18) secured the silver medal in the men’s 400-metre individual medley in the men’s category. Ganguly’s impressive timing of 4:25.47 minutes placed him in the second position, just behind England’s Reece Grady, who clocked a timing of 4:25.16 minutes.
