India’s sports fraternity is celebrating another moment of glory as Mohit Kumar secured a remarkable victory at the Under-20 World Championship, emerging as the gold medalist in the fiercely competitive 61-kilo freestyle category.
In a thrilling showdown, Mohit Kumar showcased his exceptional skills and resilience by staging a stunning comeback from a 0–6 point deficit against his Russian opponent, Eldar Akhmadudinov. The match took an electrifying turn as Kumar surged ahead, securing nine consecutive points to claim victory with a nail-biting score of 9-8.
This accomplishment marks Mohit Kumar as the fourth Indian to capture the coveted title at the Under-20 World Championship. Prior to his victory, Palwinder Chima (2001), Ramesh Kumar (2001), and Deepak Poonia (2019) had etched their names in the annals of wrestling history by achieving similar feats.
The unbeaten run of Mohit Kumar in this tournament has been nothing short of remarkable; he has triumphed in all 13 of his matches this year, showcasing his tenacity and dominance in the sport. Notably, Kumar had previously secured a gold medal in both the Asian Under-20 Championship and the Under-23 category, underscoring his consistency and exceptional talent on the global stage.
In the women’s category, another Indian wrestler, Priya, has also made the nation proud by securing a place in the finals of the 75-kilogramme category, guaranteeing herself a medal. With India’s wrestling prowess on full display, these accomplishments emphasise the country’s growing stature in the world of sports.
