New Delhi : In an unexpected turn of events, it is suspected that the lineup for the Indian cricket team’s squad in the upcoming Asia Cup may have been prematurely leaked. A list of 17 players was released by the news agency ANI ahead of the official announcement scheduled for August 21. Head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma are set to participate in the selection committee meeting via video conference, while there are indications that the chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, may address the media in New Delhi on the same day.
This year’s squad size deviates from the norm, featuring 17 players, but notably absent from the list is Keralite cricketer Sanju Samson. Speculation surrounds the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom have recovered from injuries. Sanju Samson, once a rising star in Indian cricket and even considered for the ODI World Cup, has faced setbacks due to his recent performances. Criticism mounted during the West Indies tour, with former players expressing concern about his fading form. The primary challenge facing the talented cricketer seems to be a lack of consistency.
Thilak Verma, who made a mark during the West Indies T20 series, has secured a spot in the 17-member squad. However, the inclusion of Rahul and Shreyas is contingent upon their fitness, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is deliberating the announcement of the final squad due to these fitness uncertainties.
The Asia Cup is rapidly approaching, and the cricketing world is abuzz with anticipation. Both Pakistan and Bangladesh have already unveiled their 17-member squads for the tournament, adding to the excitement.
While the official squad announcement is scheduled for tomorrow, the rumoured lineup includes the following players: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Jeet Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammad Siraj, Ishan Kishan, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Suryakumar Yadav, Thilak Verma, and either Yuzvendra Chahal or Ravichandran Ashwin.
