Colombo, Sri Lanka: The much-anticipated Asia Cup Super Four clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan in Colombo is facing an uncertain future due to persistent rain and unfavourable weather conditions. The match, which had already seen interruptions on its originally scheduled day, has been moved to a reserve day as rain continues to disrupt play.
On Sunday, the contest between India and Pakistan in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023 was halted after just 24.1 overs of play due to unrelenting rain. As a result, the match was postponed to the reserve day, with India set to resume their innings at 147/2. Notably, skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had already made delightful fifties before the rain intervened.
Unfortunately, the weather situation in Colombo on the reserve day remains grim. Heavy rains poured down at 7 a.m., further adding to the challenges of resuming the game. Complicating matters, the playing field at the R. Premadasa Stadium, the venue for this critical clash, has sustained noticeable damage due to the inclement weather. These wet patches on the field could worsen with additional rain, potentially causing further delays or even leading to the abandonment of the match without any further action.
In the event of a washout, both India and Pakistan will earn one point each, with Pakistan moving to the top of the Super Four standings with three points after previously winning against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka has also secured a win against Bangladesh, earning them two points and nearly eliminating Bangladesh from the competition.
For India, the consequences of a washed-out game could be significant. They would need to secure victories in their upcoming matches against Sri Lanka (scheduled for September 12) and Bangladesh (slated for September 15) to accumulate a total of five points. However, even losing one of these matches or facing two more washouts would reduce India to just three points, potentially jeopardising their chances of qualifying for the final.
