In a significant turn of events, Anurag Thakur, the Sports Minister of India, has cancelled his planned visit to China for the Asian Games. This decision comes in the wake of a visa controversy involving three Arunachal Pradesh, Wushu, athletes who were denied regular Chinese visas to participate in the prestigious sporting event.
The two athletes in question, Onilu Tega and Mepung Lamgu, both hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, were duly approved to participate in the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 by the organising committee. However, they encountered difficulties in downloading their accreditation cards, which function as visas for entry into China.
In a further complication, the third athlete, Nyemen Wangsu, succeeded in downloading her accreditation but was subsequently informed that she would not be allowed to travel beyond Hong Kong, effectively denying her entry into China.
These athletes were slated to compete in individual events within the martial arts sport of Wushu, representing India on the international stage.
In response to the visa issues, the Ministry of External Affairs of India confirmed that a formal protest had been lodged both in New Delhi and Beijing. This move underscores the Indian government’s commitment to addressing the matter and advocating for the rights of its athletes to participate in the Asian Games without hindrance.
