BCCI seeks new title sponsor for upcoming IPL season as agreement with TATA concludes

Mumbai: According to a report, in the pursuit of securing a new title sponsor for the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has set forth stringent conditions for potential bidders.

A notable condition includes the BCCI’s reluctance to entertain bids from Chinese companies or brands, citing concerns regarding associations with nations lacking friendly relations with Bharat. The decision comes in the wake of a public backlash and a negative experience with Vivo, a Chinese smartphone maker, which chose to exit a five-year sponsorship agreement in the aftermath of the Bharat-China border standoff.

The list of ineligible bidders has been expanded by the BCCI to include companies associated with fantasy games, sportswear, cryptocurrency, betting, gambling, and alcohol products. Firms involved in athleisure, performance wear, and sportswear are also barred from participating in the bidding process.

Although the response to the sponsorship tender was initially not very enthusiastic, the BCCI is hopeful of drawing in well-known bidders due to the IPL’s worldwide popularity. The five-year sponsorship agreement, set to continue until 2028, will go through the bidding process on January 13–14. Those interested can buy the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document until January 8.
