The T20 series against Afghanistan is the first challenge that awaits the injury-plagued Indian team in the new year. This is an important tournament for India as T20 World Cup is to be held this year. The first game of the India-Afghanistan three-match series will be played in Mohali on January 11.
With the senior players of the team suffering from injuries and Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma among others almost retired from T20, Team India may consider a new captain. Suryakumar Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Hardik Pandya are all in the injured list currently. This is why the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is considering for a new captain. Sanju Samson is the captain candidate on their radar. A century in the recent series against South Africa might also benefit the Malayali star.
Since the T20 World Cup is to be held this year, India is giving importance to the fitness of the players. The Malayali player has the experience for being considered as a captain. As the T20 World Cup is round the corner, Sanju might be considered for captaincy for this tournament. If that happens, Sanju will own the historic achievement of being the first Malayali to lead the national team. Sanju is currently with the Kerala team for the Ranji Trophy.
