Italian football legend Luigi Riva passes away at 79

Sardinia: Luigi Riva, the iconic Italian football legend also known as the ‘Roar of Thunder,’ has sadly passed away at the age of 79. Renowned as Italy’s all-time top scorer, Riva made a significant impact on the sport, scoring 35 goals in 42 matches for his country. He achieved fame by leading Cagliari, an Italian football club, to their only league title in 1970.

The Italian Football Federation ,FIGC, confirmed Luigi Riva’s death, expressing condolences for the loss. FIGC president Gabriele Gravina stated, “may Luigi’s soul rest in peace. Italian football mourns the passing of Luigi, a former captain who made great contributions to football.”

Luigi Riva played a pivotal role in Italy’s football history, contributing to their success in the European Championship in 1968. Two years later, he led Italy to the World Cup final, showcasing his excellence on the global stage. Additionally, Italy secured the World Cup in 2006, with Luigi serving as the team manager during that triumphant period.
