Thiruvananthapuram: Brazil’s U-23 football team failed to qualify for the upcoming Paris Olympics as they suffered a 0-1 defeat against Argentina, dashing their hopes of securing a spot in the Paris Olympics 2024. This marks the first time in two decades that Brazil will not be participating in Olympic football. A draw against Argentina would have been enough to secure qualification for the Brazilian squad, also known as the Yellow Army, from Latin America.
Luciano Gondou became the hero for the Argentina U-23 team, coached by Javier Mascherano, as he scored the winning goal in the 78th minute of the match. Gondou’s header, off a cross from Valentin Barco, found the back of the net past Brazilian goalkeeper Mycael at the Brigido Iriarte Stadium in Caracas. Argentina, previous champions in 2004 and 2008, are now set to compete for their third Olympic football title.
In the South American Olympic qualifying tournament for men’s football, two spots for Paris 2024 were up for grabs, with the remaining berth to be decided in a match between Paraguay and Venezuela. Argentina secured their place in the Olympics by finishing top in their final group stage campaign with five points from three matches, ensuring they cannot be overtaken by other teams.
