Manchester : Veteran pacer Stuart Broad etched his name in cricketing history as he became only the second bowler to achieve the remarkable feat of 600 Test wickets. Broad reached this momentous milestone during England’s fourth Ashes series Test against Australia at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Ahead of the match, Broad needed just two wickets to achieve the landmark. He quickly reached his 599th wicket by dismissing Usman Khawaja, creating early trouble for the Australian side. However, it was during Australia’s recovery phase that Broad struck again, taking the crucial wicket of Travis Head for 48 off 65 balls and crossing the 600-wicket mark in the longer format.
With an illustrious career spanning 166 Test matches, Stuart Broad’s achievement now stands at an incredible 600 wickets, obtained at an impressive average of 27.59. His bowling prowess includes remarkable figures of 8/15, along with an impressive 28 four-wicket hauls, 20 five-wicket hauls, and three ten-wicket hauls in Test cricket.
Despite this momentous accomplishment, Broad acknowledges that he still has some distance to cover to match his long-time teammate James Anderson’s record. Anderson, a legend in his own right, boasts an astounding 688 wickets in 182 Test matches at an average of 26.25, with a best figure of 7/42. He has an astonishing 32 four-wicket hauls, 32 five-wicket hauls, and three ten-wicket hauls in the longest format of the game.
Stuart Broad now stands as the fifth-most successful bowler in the history of Test cricket. Above him are legends like Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralidaran (800 wickets), Australia’s late spin great Shane Warne (708 wickets), James Anderson (688 wickets), and Indian spin maestro Anil Kumble (619 wickets). Notably, he is also the second-most successful pace bowler of all time in Test cricket, second only to James Anderson.
