Port of Spain: In a historic moment, Virat Kohli delivered a landmark century in his 500th international match, leading India to a commanding total of 438 runs in the first innings during the ongoing second Test against the West Indies. The second day of the match witnessed splendid performances from Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ravichandran Ashwin, each scoring half-centuries, which solidified India’s position.

Resuming the second session at 373/6, Ishan Kishan (18*) and Ravichandran Ashwin (6*) held their ground at the crease. However, Jason Holder, the West Indies captain, struck early in the session, dismissing Kishan for 25, leaving India at 393/7. The catch was taken by wicketkeeper Joshua de Silva.

India managed to cross the 400-run mark in 116.4 overs, showing their determination to post a formidable total. But the West Indies bowler, Jomel Warrican, continued to pose a threat and got his third wicket, sending Jaydev Unadkat back to the pavilion for just seven runs. Unadkat was stumped by wicketkeeper de Silva, and India reached 416/8.

Ravichandran Ashwin, showing his prowess with the bat, brought up his 14th half-century in Tests. However, Warrican struck again, claiming his fourth wicket of the match, this time dismissing Mohammed Siraj for a duck. With the fall of Siraj’s wicket, India was at 426/9.

Kermar Roach, not wanting to be left out, delivered a crucial blow to India’s innings by cleanly bowling Ashwin for a well-made 56 runs. With Ashwin’s dismissal, India was bundled out for 438 runs, setting a formidable target for the West Indies.

Among the West Indies bowlers, Warrican was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 3/89. Roach (3/104) and Holder (2/57) also contributed significantly to the team’s bowling effort.

The earlier part of the day witnessed a remarkable innings by Virat Kohli, who resumed his innings on 87 and went on to complete a flawless century. His innings of 121 runs marked his first overseas century since 2018, and it also became his second century in the Caribbean Islands. The Indian skipper’s century took his tally of Test hundreds to 29, equaling the legendary Sir Donald Bradman’s record.

Ravindra Jadeja, too, showcased his batting prowess, scoring a valuable half-century and partnering with Kohli in a crucial stand. His 61-run innings was cut short by a delivery from Roach, but it came at a crucial juncture when India needed stability in their innings.

India’s impressive performance has put them ahead in the two-match series, leading 1-0. As the second Test continues, the focus will now shift to how the West Indies respond to the daunting total set by India.
