Indian Cricket team’s batting depth under scrutiny: Coach Rahul Dravid seeks balance

Florida, USA: After a hard-fought T20I series against the West Indies resulted in a 3-2 loss for the Indian cricket team, coach Rahul Dravid has highlighted the need to address the team’s batting depth without compromising their bowling strength. In a post-match press conference, Dravid acknowledged that the lack of batting depth has been a critical issue, especially during top-order collapses.

The recently concluded series saw India enter matches with limited batting ability, with even number 11s in the lineup. This dearth of batting prowess became evident during moments of top-order and middle-order instability, which plagued the team throughout the white-ball leg of the series. In light of these challenges, Dravid emphasised the importance of building a balanced squad to face formidable opponents.

Dravid expressed, “Our squad configuration in this series somewhat limited our flexibility to experiment with combinations. Looking ahead, we must focus on areas that require improvement. Bolstering our batting depth is a priority, but it’s imperative to strike a balance that doesn’t compromise our strong bowling attack.”

As the game of cricket evolves and scores soar, the demand for versatile players who can contribute with both bat and ball becomes paramount. Dravid pointed out teams like the West Indies that exhibit depth even at lower batting positions, enabling them to mount significant challenges despite adversity. He emphasised that India must work towards similar depth while nurturing the talents of their bowlers to enhance their batting abilities.

The absence of senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shreyas Iyer due to injuries and workload management further exacerbated India’s need for all-rounders. Notably, former cricketer and analyst Wasim Jaffer suggested the necessity for Indian cricket to groom all-rounders.

Jaffer remarked, “The majority of the T20 World Cup team will come from this set of players. The youth should be harnessed to drive us forward in this format. While players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Mukesh Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Arshdeep Singh hold the potential, there are gaps that need filling. The primary concern lies in batting, particularly finishing at number seven. With the top order struggling, there’s a need to instill confidence in the batting lineup.”

Dravid commended the performances of the debutants in the series. Youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 356 runs in six innings with one century and two fifties; Tilak Varma, with 173 runs in five innings at an average of 57.66; and Mukesh Kumar, who took nine wickets across formats during the tour, displayed immense promise.

Dravid concluded, “Our debutants in this series have shown great potential. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s transition from the IPL to international cricket was impressive. Tilak Varma’s positive intent and Mukesh Kumar’s performance under pressure were notable highlights. As they head to Ireland for more opportunities, their confidence and skills will undoubtedly develop further.”
