Maxwell’s innings proved to be the turning point of the game. Despite being dropped twice, he powered through to score a remarkable century, his fourth in the World Cup, with a double century. His double century came off with just 128 balls and included an impressive 21 fours and 10 sixes, making it the highest individual score in this World Cup.

Maxwell’s unbeaten innings became even more exceptional as he battled through muscle pain. His determined performance was the driving force behind Australia’s victory, especially when they found themselves in a precarious position at 91 for seven.

Australia’s pursuit of Afghanistan’s target of 291 runs began with early wickets. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh were dismissed quickly after scoring 0 and 24 runs, respectively, and Afghanistan’s bowlers looked to be in control. However, Maxwell’s partnership with Pat Cummins, during which they added 202 runs from 170 balls, turned the tide in Australia’s favour.

Maxwell and Cummins’ resilience and outstanding batting skills helped Australia secure a thrilling win, and they reached the target with three wickets in hand.

Earlier in the match, Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 291 runs for the loss of five wickets. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz and centurion Hashmatullah Shahidi set the stage for Afghanistan’s innings. Shahidi’s impressive knock of 129 runs made him the first Afghanistan player to score a century in an ODI World Cup. His partnership with Rashid Khan, who contributed 35 runs, bolstered the Afghan innings.

In response, Australia’s pace lineup was tested by Afghanistan’s middle order, with Sadan and Rashid Khan leading the charge. However, the brilliance of Glenn Maxwell, along with the support of Pat Cummins, led Australia to a thrilling victory, keeping their hopes alive in the World Cup.
