During his visit to India as part of a six-nation tour, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman engaged in discussions with prominent figures in the Indian tech industry. At an event, Rajan Anandan, former Google India Chief and venture capitalist, approached Altman, seeking advice on how Indian start-ups could develop AI models similar to those created by OpenAI.
Altman responded by reiterating that competing with OpenAI in training foundational models would be an insurmountable challenge. He emphasised that attempting to do so would be futile, but he also acknowledged the responsibility of Indian entrepreneurs to make the attempt despite the slim chances of success.
Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani, undeterred by Altman’s remarks, expressed his willingness to accept the challenge, highlighting the potential of Indian companies to compete and excel in the field of AI.
Similarly, Rajan Anandan took to twitter to appreciate Altman’s candid response and stated that India’s long history of entrepreneurship has shown that underestimating Indian entrepreneurs is a mistake. He affirmed that Indian entrepreneurs would indeed make the effort to pursue AI advancements.
During his visit, Altman also had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed the potential impact of AI on job markets and the creation of new roles. Altman praised India’s remarkable tech ecosystem, with a specific mention of the achievements in building the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Aadhaar.
