WhatsApp plans a custom password feature for enhanced chat security

In a bid to intensify security measures, WhatsApp is reportedly gearing up to introduce a custom password feature to protect chat folders. This innovative feature will enable users to set a personalised password for their secured chat folders.

According to WABetaInfo, users will be able to input this unique code in the app’s search bar to  access protected chats. The proposed update also hints at the possibility of configuring a secret code to secure chats from companion devices.

The anticipated feature is said to be part of the Google Play Beta programme and is expected to roll out in the upcoming 2.23.21.9 beta version for Android. This feature is not yet available for testers and is slated for inclusion in a future app update.

WhatsApp introduced the Chat Lock feature in May for both Android and iOS users. The Chat Lock feature empowers users to safeguard the privacy and security of their messages by applying locks that can be unlocked using a password, fingerprint, or facial recognition.

Locked chats are segregated into another folder, ensuring the confidentiality of conversations even if someone gains access to the user’s phone. Meanwhile, notifications for these chats will not reveal the sender’s name or message previews, adding an extra layer of privacy.
