West Bengal Panchayat elections: Congress urge for central force

Congress party president requested for central force

Kolkata: The West Bengal Congress state unit demanded for central force. State Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury requested Governor CV Ananda Bose in a letter yesterday to arrange for Central forces during the panchayat elections to have free and fair elections.

According to the letter, the Chowdhury mentioned that the ruling Trinamool Congress is attacking Congress party workers and that there is no ‘pancayat raj’, but only ‘jungle raj’. Two Congress Party workers were killed last day. Following this, the Congress has sent a letter to the Governor.

In the letter, Choudhary said that “there is insecurity in every part of the state and the Trinamool Congress is working by forgetting democratic etiquette. In this situation, a free and fair panchayat election in the month of July in West Bengal, would be a far-reaching dream. Therefore, I humbly solicit your good office to do the needful for conducting the said election under the direct supervision of the central forces. Your prompt action in this regard is highly solicited”.

But this move by the Bengal Congress is a setback for the national leadership of the party. The national leadership of the Congress is trying to form a broad alliance at the national level by keeping Mamata by any means possible. But the fact that the state leader of the Congress party himself has come out publicly may backfire on the alliance movements.
