New Delhi: In response to the heinous crimes, including incidents of sexual harrasment and land grabbing, perpetrated by leaders of the Trinamool Congress in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) sent a six-point memorandum to the President Draupadi Murmu.
In the memorandum, ABVP demanded an impartial investigation to deliver justice to the victims, entrusting the responsibility of the inquiry to central agencies for immediate and effective action.
In addition, ABVP demanded the establishment of secure and accessible helpline numbers for victims and witnesses, provision of free legal aid to ensure judicial recourse, availability of psychological counseling sessions to aid in recovery, and deployment of central forces to restore peace and security in Sandeshkhali.
ABVP said that the incident in Sandeshkhali exposed the rampant atrocities and heinous crimes against women and the dire state of women’s safety in West Bengal. The Mamta government’s leniency towards criminals and failure to deliver justice to victimized women by sheltering the perpetrators aggravate the situation.
The nationalist student organization had led widespread student protests across 910 locations, in more than 450 districts, including 250 university campuses nationwide, demanding immediate action.
A mega protest took place on 5 March at Banga (Bengal) Bhavan in Delhi, and a huge demonstration was led by ABVP in Kolkata against heinous crimes in Sandeshkhali. On March 11th, students rallied under the Uttar Kanya Abhiyan in Siliguri, expressing concern and demanding accountability for the incident from the TMC government.
ABVP National General Secretary, Yagywalkya Shukla, stated, “Since the Sandeshkhali incident, students across the country have raised their voices through vigorous protests, demanding justice for women fallen victim to heinous crimes in Sandeshkhali. However, the nexus between the ‘Nirmamta’ (merciless) government and criminals not only impedes justice for victims but also instills a sense of insecurity and fear among them and other residents. To ensure justice for victimized women and restore normalcy in Sandeshkhali, ABVP sent a six-point memorandum to the Honourable President of Bharat, Shrimati Draupadi Murmu, with hopes of swift action.”
