North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed his commitment to strengthen strategic cooperation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in their shared objective of building powerful nations, according to a statement from the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). In a message sent to Putin on the occasion of Russia’s National Day, Kim defended Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine and showed his “full support and solidarity” with Russia.
The KCNA-published message emphasised Kim’s belief that justice would ultimately prevail and that the Russian people would continue to contribute to a glorious history of victory. Stressing the need for closer strategic cooperation, Kim stated, “In line with the common aspirations of our peoples to achieve the great goal of building powerful nations, I am determined to firmly hold hands with the Russian president.”
North Korea has actively pursued stronger ties with Russia and has aligned itself with Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine. The country attributes this support to its opposition to what it perceives as the “hegemonic policy” and ” high-handedness” of the United States and Western powers.
This is not the first instance of Kim expressing admiration for Putin. In May, Kim sent a letter praising Russia’s “holy fight” against what he called imperialists and extending warm wishes to the Russian army and its people for their efforts in preserving global peace.
