London: Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios announced his withdrawal from Wimbledon 2023. The 28-year-old took to Instagram to break the news, revealing that he has suffered a torn ligament in his wrist, forcing him to miss out on the prestigious grand slam tournament.

Kyrgios, who was the runner-up at Wimbledon, last year, has been plagued by injuries this season. He was forced to sit out two major grand slam events, the Australian Open and the French Open, due to previous injuries. In January, a knee injury kept him from participating in his home grand slam, and more recently, a foot injury prevented him from competing in the French Open held from May to June.

Upon hearing the news, Wimbledon’s official Twitter handle sent well wishes to the Australian player, hoping for his speedy recovery.

Kyrgios was scheduled to face David Goffin in the first round on Court 1 on Monday. As a result of his withdrawal, Casper Ruud’s match has been moved from Court 2 to Court 1 to fill the vacancy left by Kyrgios. The replacement for the Australian will be determined by a draw on Monday.

While Kyrgios has yet to win a grand slam tournament, his impressive runner-up finish at Wimbledon last year remains his best performance at such events. He has also achieved quarterfinal finishes in the Australian Open and the US Open, with his best showing in the French Open reaching the third round. Currently ranked 33rd in singles by the ATP, Kyrgios has won seven titles throughout his career, accumulating a record of 205 wins and 114 losses. However, this year, he has only played in a single match, which unfortunately ended in defeat.

Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the tennis calendar, is set to commence on Monday and run until July 16.
