Thiruvananthapuram: The stretch of road called the Manaveeyam Veedhi, which was the state government’s answer to night life in Kerala, is fast turning into a hub for anti-social elements. The recent spike in attacks and unruly behavior comes after the police failed to check the activities of the anti-social elements.
In a knife attack that took place in the wee hours, today, at Manaveeyam Veedhi, a resident of Chembaruthi, Dhanu Krishna, got injured. He is currently undergoing treatment at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital. The police have apprehended the attacker and the lady, who was accompanying him. All of them were under the influence of alcohol.
It is said that the attack happened after a quarrel about filming an Instagram video. The police reported that the attack happened at an area where CCTV visuals are not available. The youths behind the attack had remained in the area even after the police had warned them to move out from the place.
Though the police claim that Manaveeyam Veedhi is under police surveillance, attacks and altercations are frequent here. Most of the people hanging out at Manaveeyam Veedhi at night are said to be intoxicated. They also do not heed police warnings to vacate the area after midnight.
Senior police officers claim that more security officers cannot be deployed in the area as most of the officers are on election duty.
Though the government had touted Manaveeyam Veedhi as the capital city’s answer to night life the area is now prone to frequent attacks fueled by intoxicants.
