New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated an investigation into the viral video from Manipur that depicts the alleged parade of two women in a naked state. The controversial video emerged on social media, triggering a heated exchange of words between the BJP-led Centre and the Opposition, drawing attention to the situation in Manipur following ethnic clashes on May 4.

A senior CBI officer confirmed the registration of the First Information Report (FIR) related to the case. Further details regarding the investigation are yet to be disclosed.

Sources indicate that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was already constituted, led by a high-ranking officer, to probe the matter. Meanwhile, CBI officials, presently stationed in Manipur, will handle other cases, including those linked to the viral video.

“The CBI team will question the arrested accused. The process of handing over the evidence is already underway by the local police,” a source told.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) transferred the case to the CBI, following which the agency acted swiftly, registering the case within 48 hours.

Subsequent to the video’s circulation, Manipur Police detained six individuals allegedly involved in the incident. Investigators have also managed to recover the mobile phone that was used to shoot the video, leading to the arrest of the person responsible for recording the footage.

The violent unrest in Manipur stemmed from a protest staged by the All Tribal Student’s Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3. The demonstration was in response to a high court order, urging the state government to consider adding the Meitei community to the list of Scheduled Tribes.
