Amman City: Priya Malik, a rising star in Indian women’s wrestling, etched her name in the annals of the sport’s history by clinching the gold medal in the women’s 76kg category at the 2023 U20 World Championships. Her remarkable victory not only marks a personal triumph but also signifies a significant milestone for Indian wrestling on the global stage.

Having previously secured a silver medal at the 2022 U20 World Championships, former World Cadet Champion Priya Malik elevated her performance to the highest podium, shining bright as the world champion this year. The 18-year-old athlete hails from the village of Nidani in Haryana, showcasing the incredible talent nurtured in the heartland of India.

In the final match held in Amman, Priya Malik displayed exceptional prowess and skill, overpowering her opponent Laura Celine Kuechn from Germany with an impressive score of 6-0 on points.

Priya Malik’s remarkable journey includes being a two-time U17 world champion, a testament to her consistency and commitment to wrestling excellence. Her performance in the 2023 U20 World Championships was characterised by a solid defence and an array of diverse attacks, marking a stark improvement over her 2022 self.
