Ernakulam: Entrepreneurs in Ernakulam are struggling as a dispute between trade unions escalates, adversely affecting businesses and causing significant financial loss. The conflict revolves around a dispute between the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Cochin Port Workers Union regarding the allocation of labor.
One such entrepreneur, Shajar, hailing from Kochi, has been trapped in a problem that has continued for two weeks. His problems began on the 9th of this month, when he secured a scrap auction for a sum of Rs 6.5 lakh. The auction included an array of items, including 30 coolers. Shajar is currently burdened with a daily fine of Rs 6,500 due to his inability to remove goods from the Port Trust godown in Kochi.
The dispute has escalated to the point of physical violence between CITU and the Cochin Port Workers Union, with neither party willing to quit. Shajar, in a bid to resolve the situation, has expressed his willingness to comply with the requirements of both unions. However, the CITU said that they have the right to unload, while the Cochin Port Workers Union opposes any offloading from the godown.
The Cochin Port Trust has imposed a daily fine of Rs 6,500 on Shajar. The trust has announced that the fine will double in the coming week if the situation remains unresolved.
