Center to prevent cyber fraud; mobile phone users to get 14-digit digital ID

New Delhi: The Center is all set to introduce a Unique Identification Number (Unique ID) for mobile phone users, expected to be implemented by the end of this year. This identification number will be similar to the 14-digit digital ID of the Ayushman Bharat scheme. An individual can have multiple phone numbers, but they will be assigned only one unique ID.

The primary objective is to prevent cyber frauds. If any phone number is involved in fraud, the identity can be used to trace the person. Information such as the use of different SIM cards, place of purchase, and place of use can all be associated with an individual’s unique ID. If the SIM is intended for use by a family member, that should also be reported.

Up to nine SIM cards can be registered in one’s name. Any SIM exceeding this limit must be surrendered. All connections will undergo re-verification if an individual is found to possess more SIM cards than the allowed limit. To obtain a SIM card, the images users provide to the telecom companies will be scanned using the AI system known as Astra. Additionally, the rule that only registered SIM card dealers can sell SIM cards will come into effect next month.
