Kozhikode: The main accomplice of the primary accused in the deepfake case, Kaushal Shah, has been apprehended by the cyber police. Sheikh Mursu Mayi Hayat was arrested for his involvement in extorting Rs 40,000 from Radhakrishnan, a resident of Palazhi, Kozhikode. The fraudulent activity included imitating the voice of Radhakrishnan’s friend and making a deceptive phone call.
Radhakrishnan, employed in North of Bharat, fell victim to a deepfake scheme where his co-worker’s image was manipulated. The perpetrators demanded money through a WhatsApp video call. Radhakrishnan became suspicious after making the payment and subsequently filed a complaint with the cyber police.
During the police investigation, the embezzled money was traced on the same day. It was established that Kaushal Shah was responsible for the fraud; however, he managed to escape to Nepal. Sheikh Mursu Mayi Hayat, the arrested accomplice, played a crucial role in setting up the technical infrastructure for the fraudulent activity. He is scheduled to appear in court today for remand. The investigation to apprehend Kaushal Shah has been intensified in collaboration with law enforcement agencies from other states.
