THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala state government has once again revised the validity of vehicle pollution tests to 12 months. Initially, in contravention of the Central Government’s order, the Kerala government had mandated a validity of only 6 months for vehicle pollution test certificates. The new revision also applies to the validity of Bharat Stage 4 (BS4) vehicle certificates.
The revision in the Kerala government’s directive came after a High Court order. In 2022, owners of pollution testing centers had requested to Kerala’s Transport Minister, Antony Raju, requesting a reduction in the duration of the pollution test certificate to six months.
In response, the Minister directly revised the validity of pollution test certificates for two-wheelers and three-wheelers to 6 months.
However, upon questioning by the High Court, Transport Secretary Biju Prabhakar and Transport Commissioner S. Sreejith submitted a report indicating that reducing the validity period contradicts the central government’s order. Nevertheless, the reduction was implemented based on the Minister’s directive, without any additional reasons provided.
Subsequently, the High Court instructed adherence to the Central government’s prescribed validity period of 12 months.
