Young man commits suicide due to bank’s threats and foreclosure pressure

Thrissur: A 26-year-old man from Kanjani in Thrissur took his own life, reportedly frustrated by the bank foreclosure process. The victim, identified as Vishnu, had obtained a loan of Rs 8 lakh from a private bank to construct a house. While the family had repaid Rs 8,74,000, disruptions in repayment led to pending arrears.

Facing the repercussions of overdue payments, the bank initiated foreclosure proceedings, demanding the family vacate the house due to outstanding arrears amounting to Rs 6 lakh. Vishnu ended his life this morning as he and his family were preparing to shift to a relative’s house. He found dead in his bedroom.

Relatives claim that the repayment interruptions were a consequence of the Covid crisis, and they further allege that the bank had been constantly threatening Vishnu. A panchayat member revealed having sought additional time from the bank and contends that the suicide might have been averted if the bank authorities had granted additional time.
