New Delhi: Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi assumed office as the new Vice Chief of Army Staff on Monday. Following his appointment, General Dwivedi paid homage to the fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in Delhi.
Lt Gen Dwivedi, an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa (MP), was commissioned into the 18 JAK RIF on December 15, 1984. He has commanded troops in diverse terrains, including the Kashmir valley and the deserts of Rajasthan, demonstrating a balanced exposure to both the Northern and Western theatres.
During his tenure, he provided strategic guidance for operations along the borders with China and Pakistan, as well as overseeing counterterrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, he focused on fostering synergy with the local populace in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh to promote nation-building initiatives and infrastructure development.
General Manoj Pande, the current Chief of Army Staff, will retire on May 31, 2024. During this time, Dwivedi will be considered the next army chief.
