Thiruvananthapuram: It has been 28 years since the release of the blockbuster film ‘Kaalapani,’ a poignant portrayal of brave patriots who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. The screenplay for this film was written by T. Damodaran, directed by Priyadarshan, and features actor Mohanlal in the lead role. This movie is beloved by Malayalees for its filmmaking style, screenplay, and songs. The film was released on April 6th, 1996.
Featuring an ensemble cast including Mohanlal, Sreenivasan, Prabhu, Tabu, and Amrish Puri, ‘Kaalapani’ narrates the history of the freedom struggle through the lives of Govardhan, portrayed by Mohanlal, and Mukund Iyengar, portrayed by Prabhu, who fought for independence. Priyadarshan’s direction brought out Mohanlal’s stellar performance in ‘Kaalapani,’ where he portrayed Govardhan’s patriotism, vengeance, and love.

The production of the film ‘Kaalapani’ was completed in just 60 days. ‘Kaalapani’ was been released in various languages such as Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. It received five National Awards and seven State Awards in 1995, with Mohanlal winning the State Award for the Best Actor.
