Confirming earlier rumours, DC Studio’s co-CEO James Gunn announced on Tuesday that rising US star David Corenswet will be stepping into the role of Superman for the upcoming film “Superman: Legacy,” slated for release in 2025 by Warner Bros. Corenswet, known for his lead role in the Netflix series “Hollywood,” will join the ranks of actors who have donned Superman’s famous red cape. Alongside this news, it was revealed that Rachel Brosnahan, the Emmy-winning star of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” will portray Lois Lane, Superman’s love interest.
The selection of Corenswet comes after much speculation regarding the successor to Henry Cavill, who portrayed Superman on the big screen for a decade. Corenswet reportedly won the role over contenders such as Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney.
Brosnahan’s acclaimed performance as Midge Maisel has earned her multiple awards, including an Emmy and two Golden Globes. Other actors who were reportedly considered for the role of Lois Lane include Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor.
Superman has been portrayed in previous films by actors such as Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and most recently, Henry Cavill. In an effort to revitalise the DC film franchise, Warner, under new leadership following its merger with Discovery, appointed director James Gunn, known for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and producer Peter Safran to oversee all movies based on DC Comics superheroes. Their goal is to reinvigorate the DC films, which have faced challenges at the box office compared to the record-breaking Marvel superhero films. As part of this new direction, the role of Superman has been recast.
It’s important to note that James Gunn, in addition to being co-CEO, will also write and direct the new Superman film. The rumoured storyline for this adaptation is expected to follow a young Superman as he discovers his role as a superhero in a world that already has established superheroes. Furthermore, it was recently announced that director Andy Muschietti, known for “The Flash,” will be helming the new iteration of Batman in the DC universe.
