The Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) has recently implemented certain restrictions on the Tamil film industry, sparking considerable controversy and backlash. According to the new rules, Tamil films should only cast Tamil actors, and shooting outside Tamil Nadu should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. These decisions have faced severe criticism from various sectors within the film industry and cinema enthusiasts alike. One of the latest critics of this move is renowned Malayalam filmmaker Vinayan, who has also worked on a few Tamil films.
Malayalam actors have historically been an integral part of the star cast in Tamil cinema. Expressing his disapproval of FEFSI’s decision, Vinayan took to Facebook and voiced his concerns. He highlighted that if Kerala were to reciprocate and refrain from releasing Tamil movies in the state, it could potentially cause a loss of around Rs 150 crore to the Tamil film industry in just one year.
Vinayan was disappointed by the excessively localised approach taken by many Tamil Nadu cinema groups, especially in a country where all Indians are considered brothers and sisters. He noted that, despite the fact that this development had been known for some time, the Tamil Nadu government had not objected to the limits.
Labelling the move “separatist,” Vinayan argued that no one should hinder Indian artists from working in any state or language. He called on the producers, theatre owners, and distributors of Malayalam cinema to prepare to deliver a strong response to these restrictions.
Despite having worked in Tamil films and having a soft spot for Tamil Nadu, Vinayan strongly opposed the limitations’ restricted attitude. He has directed several Tamil films, including “Naalai Namadhe,” “En Mana Vaanil,” and “Kasi.”
