Thiruvananthapuram: In a recent interview conducted as part of the promotion for his upcoming movie ‘Neru,’ acclaimed Malayalam actor Mohanlal took a strong stance against the dowry system. Expressing his views, the actor emphasised that he didn’t ask for dowry for his marriage and affirmed that he would not endorse the practice for his daughter’s wedding.
Mohanlal, known for addressing social issues in his films, reiterated his opposition to dowry, stating that “in many films, I have spoken against the dowry system. As an actor, it saddens me to witness such practices. Hearing about crimes in society, like child kidnapping, invokes a desire to see justice served. ‘Neru’ explores such societal crimes.”
He continued, “I experience an internal conflict as an actor who consistently addresses the issue of dowry in numerous films. It saddens me to witness such societal norms. When news of a child kidnapping surfaces, our immediate concern is whether the perpetrator has been apprehended. ‘Neru,’ the film I am associated with, delves into one such societal crime, aiming to shed light on the gravity of the issue.”
Jeethu Joseph, the director of ‘Neru,’ echoed Mohanlal’s thoughts and praised the strength of today’s young women. He highlighted that “girls are mentally strong, and some are emotionally resilient. I have two daughters, and they firmly state that they will not marry anyone who requests dowry”.
