Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned actor and producer G. Suresh Kumar recently shared his perspective on the current state of Malayalam cinema, suggesting that audiences is not giving enough importance to the industry. Speaking at a programme organised as part of the International Book Festival, Suresh Kumar expressed his difficulty in enjoying many of the recent super hit films, Leo and Romancham, and understanding the evolving tastes of viewers.
During his speech, Suresh Kumar mentioned Vijay’s recent release, ‘Leo,’ stating that it did not leave a significant impact on him, especially the climax portion. He emphasised the importance of audiences exploring Malayalam cinema, citing the popularity of young Tamil directors Lokesh Kanagaraj and Nelson among fans.
Kumar conveyed his thoughts on ‘Leo,’ underscoring that although the film may captivate a broader audience within Tamil cinema and Kerala audience , he personally struggled to connect with it due to a generation gap. He pointed to a scene in the climax where the protagonist faces more than 200 opponents simultaneously, earning cheers from fans but failing to convince him.
Reflecting on the recent Malayalam hit ‘Romancham,’ Suresh Kumar acknowledged that “’Romancham’ is a recent successful Malayalam film. Despite it being labeled as a comedy by many, I personally did not find it amusing. However, I don’t consider the movie to be bad either. I’ve witnessed a significant rush and push on the opening day of a film release. However, the preferences of the audience have evolved over time, and now they lean towards supporting directors like Lokesh Kanagaraj and Nelson.”.
Expressing his generational difference, Kumar admitted feeling confused when listening to contemporary stories, adding that he advises his daughter to pay attention to the narrative. He praised Malayalam directors who are like Lokesh and highlighted the significant fanbase they enjoy in the state.
