During the Ganeshotsava celebration in Ottapalam, actor Unni Mukundan surprised everyone with the announcement of his upcoming film, ‘Jai Ganesh’, produced under his own banner, UMF (Unni Mukundan Films). The film will be directed by Ranjith Shankar.
Unni Mukundan’s announcement comes in the midst of a controversy surrounding the Left’s disregard for Hindu beliefs. This followed Speaker AN Shamseer’s refusal to apologise for comments deemed disrespectful to Lord Ganesha, which led to protests by various Hindu organisations and the BJP.
Speaking at the event, Unni Mukundan expressed his resolve to stand up against any insult to his faith. He emphasised that raising one’s voice against such insults does not require special courage, and he cited examples like the complexities faced when uttering ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in Kerala or producing films centred around deities like Ayyappan and Ganesha. Unni Mukundan firmly believes that these issues affect him as a believer, and he stressed the importance of respectful dialogue about faith.
The actor shared his experience with his previous film, ‘Malikappuram’, a devotional movie, which garnered significant success despite the challenges faced during its production. Unni Mukundan credited this success to Ayyappan’s blessings and the support of the community.
Reiterating his commitment to his beliefs, Unni Mukundan noted that he doesn’t need extraordinary strength to express his convictions. He highlighted India’s diversity, where both believers and non-believers coexist, and urged for responses against any affront to one’s faith. He stated that slogans like ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and artistic creations revolving around revered deities like Ayyappan and Ganesha shouldn’t be treated as problematic.
