Osaka: Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal has made a jaw-dropping world record bid of €300 million ($330 million) for Paris Saint-Germain’s star forward Kylian Mbappe. A source close to the negotiations disclosed the news on Monday, setting the football world abuzz with speculation and intrigue.
Real Madrid, the club widely believed to be leading the race to secure the services of the prolific forward, is among several other elite clubs that have expressed interest in Mbappe, according to the source. Al Hilal, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), has taken the bold step of making a formal offer to PSG through a letter. However, the transfer can only materialise with the agreement of Mbappe, who has never previously shown any interest in moving to the rapidly expanding Saudi League.
The source revealed, “The club has given permission to Al Hilal to speak with Mbappe. That’s the request of the letter, and that’s been granted.” The 24-year-old Mbappe, who has one year remaining on his contract with PSG, has been in a contractual standoff with the French club as they wish to avoid losing him for free next summer.
Despite PSG’s efforts to persuade him to sign a new contract, Mbappe has reportedly already struck a deal to join Real Madrid next year on a free transfer. This has led to intense interest from several top-tier clubs, including Manchester United, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Tottenham, and the ambitious Saudi club Al Hilal.
Real Madrid’s approach marks a change in tactics, as they previously attempted to sign Mbappe last year before he chose to stay with PSG alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi (who has since left for MLS franchise Inter Miami).
The tension between Mbappe and PSG escalated over the weekend when the club omitted him from their squad for the Japan and South Korea tours. There have been suggestions that if an agreement isn’t reached, Mbappe may not be selected for an entire year.
Kylian Mbappe, PSG’s all-time leading scorer with an impressive record of 212 goals in 260 appearances, is currently the second most expensive player in history, trailing only his PSG teammate Neymar. His initial move from Monaco to PSG in 2017 was initially a season-long loan, but it turned into a permanent transfer the following year in a staggering €180 million deal. This amount was surpassed only by Neymar’s €222 million move to PSG in 2017.
With the trio of Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi (who departed at the end of last season) on their roster, PSG won the French title but was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the last 16 stage by Bayern Munich in the previous season.
