Akshaya Tritiya is observed on the third lunar day of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakha month. This day is very auspicious and sacred especially for the Hindus and Jains as they engage in spiritual activities to churn out the best in this Vaishakha month. As per Vedic literatures, any such auspicious day must be utilized for cultivating spiritual strengths.
The Sanskrit word ‘Akshaya’ means that which does not decay or diminish. Any good work carried out on this day will yield good results and shall not diminish, but multiply.
There are two kinds of activities- one pertains to the one’s body (physical/material) and the other to one’s soul (spiritual). Results from actovoties associated with the body are temporary and the latter with eternal bliss.
This day also holds significance because it is believed that on this day God Surya presented ‘Akshaya Patra’ to Yudhishthira during their exile in the forest. The Patra gave unlimited food till Draupadi had her food for the day.
This is day is also considered as Parasurama Jayanti, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and he is revered in Vaishnava temples. The day of his birth also marked the beginning of Treta Yuga.

It is believed that on this day Kubera attained the post of the treasurer. Therefore, buying and worshiping gold pleases him.
