Kochi: In a significant operation, the Customs Department at Kochi Airport intercepted a passenger arriving from Bahrain via Calicut and seized 1069.57 grams of gold with an estimated value of Rs 57 lakhs. The passenger, identified as Asraf and hailing from Kozhikode, was travelling on an Air India Express flight. The gold, in the form of four concealed capsules, was found hidden inside his body.
This incident follows another major seizure by the Air Intelligence Unit at Kochi Airport on June 10. In that operation, 2207.24 grams of foreign-origin gold jewellery valued at Rs 1, 21, 83,965 was seized from four passengers who had arrived from Malaysia.
